Patrick Usborne, Founding Director
BSc(Phys), AADipl, ARB, RIBA

Patrick founded Perpendicular with Aelene. An advocate of architectural innovation, Patrick regularly speaks about opportunities for designers to embrace modern methods of construction, and the use of bio-based materials as a sustainable form of construction.

Previously an Associate at de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM), the 2018 Stirling Prize-winning practice, Patrick has been involved in the design and delivery of a number of key mixed-use, commercial, residential and educational buildings. This includes one of London’s tallest cross laminated timber buildings, and a new primary school in Cambridgeshire.

At Serie Architects Patrick collaborated with teams in China, Singapore, India and Kazakhstan and became well versed at delivering large scale international projects. Prior to this Patrick was a scholarship student at the world-leading Architectural Association for six years; and is still a member of this international educational network.

Aelene Thorne, Founding Director
MArch, AADipl, ARB, RIBA

Aelene founded Perpendicular with Patrick, prior to this she worked at a Stirling Prize award winning London practices on public and private sector work. She was part of the team at de Rijke Marsh Morgan (dRMM) that won BD Education Architect of the Year and Architect of the Year in 2013.

Her broad experience, including at Feilden Clegg Bradley, has seen her work on commercial development, mixed-use and residential developments, private housing, retrofit and refurbishment projects, including complex listed buildings. She also has expertise in the design of sheltered accommodation.

Aelene has worked alongside practice Directors to improve their business development; she is highly proficient in the implementation of quality management systems whilst focused on continual improvement of design quality and client relationships. Aelene ensures that Perpendicular’s business policy and procedures place it truly at the forefront of sustainable architectural and social enterprise.
